5 Warning Signs Of An Impending Relapse

The journey of recovery is a long road and rarely is it a straight line. Often, there are twists and turns that can put you at a greater risk of a relapse. Being able to identify warning signs that a relapse is imminent can greatly improve your chance of avoiding a painful and frustrating setback.

Warning Signs Of An Impending Relapse

The following are some of the important warning signs that you need to be aware of as an individual in recovery.

1. Believing You Can Use Again

Decide That You Want Sobriety More Than You Are Afraid Of ItAddicts who relapse often report their thinking slowly changed over time and they started to believe they could have “just one” without suffering any consequences. However, it’s this faulty thinking that indicates there could be a serious problem just ahead.

Those in danger of relapse need to stay focused on their recovery and remind themselves how far they’ve come.  Compulsion is a key component of this chronic condition. In other words, “just one” almost always turns into “too many.”

Avoiding relapse starts with deciding that you want sobriety more than you are afraid of it.

2. Moving Away From Your Addiction Recovery Program

Although many people leave rehab enthusiastically immersed in their recovery, over time, their program can slowly drop off. It’s when this happens that it’s possible to head down the road to relapse. Staying steadfastly dedicated to your addiction recovery program is essential.

3. Emotional Instability

Anxiety, depression, fear, mood swings are all common relapse triggers that can lead you back to using again. While everyone has periods of time when they are not emotionally strong, it’s important to consider these red flags that danger is looming.

4. Revisiting Bad Influences And Old Haunts

Surround Yourself With Supportive PeopleFeeling a desire to visit your favorite bar or visit that friend who you used to do drugs with is an indicator that something is wrong. You learned in rehab that triggers that put you at a high risk of relapse should be avoided.

Having the need to revisit these people and places is an almost certain set-up for relapse. Think about and be mindful of these influences before you act on them.

You may need to clean house of old friends and old hangouts, yet again. If someone doesn’t support your sobriety 100%, then they don’t truly support you or your future. To maintain or rein in your recovery and sobriety, it’s important to have a solid network of friends and family that can both hold you accountable and that you can turn to in times of temptation. This is why we also recommend having a sponsor for your first few months out of rehab.

5. Being Deceptive

The need to hide actions or behaviors means you’re well on the road to a relapse even if you haven’t begun using again. Lying, hiding, and deceiving others were all part of your “modus operandi” when you were addicted. By staying an open book, you can reduce your risk of relapse significantly.

Don’t Beat Yourself Up Because Of A Relapse

While relapse is a setback, it doesn’t mean that you have forever lost your chance of recovery. Remember – recovery is a lifetime journey, and relapses are common. Interestingly, addiction relapse rates are similar to those of other treatable chronic illnesses. Rather than blaming yourself, focus on getting the help you need.
